Meandering through Mikonos I feel like I am on the set of Mamma Mia, crystal clear blue water, blues skies and white washed buildings. I love the architecture of Greece, the unique and recognisable characteristics of Cycladic architecture, the bright blue paint on the shutters and doors against the white washed buildings, which are designed to keep the heat at bay throughout the hot summer days. Flat roofs and cubic shapes of the houses, which so i've read help to protect against the sometimes strong winds that sweep across Mikonos, which on our last day in Greece we experienced first hand. The winds reaching up to the speeds of 23 miles per hour on that particular day. I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of flowers in bloom throughout the town, brilliant bright colours and fragrances, that creep up walls and trellises.
As we were wandering around the town we came across an art exhibition. As we were looking at the sculpture in the photo above the artist who's exhibition it was happened to come out and introduced himself. He told us that the horse sculpture was made from materials he used to cook with from his restaurant, old pots and pans and appliances, which I thought was pretty cool. As we continued to walk through the town we came across a more open but busy area, where many restaurants and cafes were, the interior design of a lot of the places to eat we quirky and modern with contemporary twists like the photo below.
Yes we did squeeeeeze through the tiniest street I think i've ever walked down...
At around eight O' clock we walked back up to the hill that the windmills were on to sit and watch the sun set. I don't think Ive ever taken the time to sit and watch a full sun set completely disappear from view, at home im surrounded by houses or buildings and in day to day life, I never really take much notice of it. Its quite surreal and calming to behold and the Greek sunset was just stunningly beautiful.
